A Fabulous New Musical – Swan Canaries

As the tinsel and broken baubles get swept away, never fear, all sparkle is not lost! With this New Year we start work on Swan Canaries, a new Nottingam musical, and there’s going to be plenty of glitter and yellow feathers to brighten things up. Swan Canaries will be developed for its first “unveiling” at Nottingham Castle for Nottingham by Night on February 28th. And its going to be a humdinger!

Starting with a 1918 teadance (with a special Arletty “twist”), and fabulous songs from the era, this show will burst in to existence, resplendent in its canary-yellow glory! A celebration of the extraordinary contribution of the Chilwell Canary Girls, who filled over half the shells fired by British soldiers in World War I, the show will incorporate elements of Music Hall, as well as original songs, and some of the old ones. We might even slip in a fan-dance… with yellow feathers, of course.

Swan Canaries will go to Buxton and Edinburgh Fringes, as well as touring Nottinghamshire venues and villages. We’re thrilled that it will form part of Trent to Trenches and the excellent Lowdham Literature Festival. Keep checking our What’s On page for performance dates.

We’ll have our first workshop in a couple of weeks, and I’m really looking forward to working with the fantastic Kitty Winter-Walker on the movement. We’ll be recreating the biggest explosion this country has ever known, as well as exploring what it was like for the young troops at the front, who formed part of Nottingham’s Sherwood Foresters. This piece is going to be incredibly moving – after all these were real events here in Nottingham, and people gave their lives – but it is also going to be a joyous celebration of these remarkable lives, and of what can be achieved, against all odds.

The wonderful Patchwork Lives also continues to tour this year, and we’re delighted to be performing the first show in Egmanton Village Hall on January 25th. On March the 6th its at the New Art Exchange as part of Vocal. This will include a fascinating discussion of some of the themes of the show, which is about inspiring women.

Its going to be an amazing year!
